The day will come when mulesing will become an unacceptable practice. At this moment in time it continues to be a topic of debate with traditional growers and some industry leaders standing firm regarding the practice.
Ron decided many years ago to try and delete the practice from his flock, this was achieved in 2008. After many years of selection AI (Artificial Insemination) and ET (Embryo Transfer) work, we are able to manage the flock without the practice. Our sheep are open faced with a flat wide back and have an area of flat bare skin around the area that is traditionally mulesed. The breech regions of the ewes and rams are free of skin wrinkle, breech strike in these non-mulesed sheep has become a rare event. Our ewes rear their lambs so they wean heavier with few losses without the practice.
